John hails from North Yorkshire, England and grew up in social housing in a village near York. Following his success in gaining a degree from Manchester University in Business and Commerce John moved to London in the late 80s.
John was based for the first 4 years of his career in Lincoln Inns Field, Holborn at a medium sized Chartered Accountants, Finnie & Co. The firm specialised in housing associations and John became an audit specialist in this sector managing audits of all sizes of organisations. He worked regularly on key clients such as the Notting Hill Genesis, Sanctuary Housing and Catalyst Communities Housing Association.
For over 25 years John held senior business and accounting roles both nationally and internationally for a range of leading organisations such as Freemantle Media and Fairfax Media (Sydney). More recently he has focussed on the non-government sector working as contractor for Argyle Housing, the University of Technology Sydney, Powerhouse Museum and NSW local government (Shellharbour and Wollongong).
John has also held senior business manager roles for a range of leading organisations such as iTouch Australia (2004-2006), Fairfax Media (2007-9), and the Powerhouse Museum (2014-15) based in Sydney. These roles also encompassed market sector and competitor analysis, media promotions, website building and analytics and communications strategies.
John has now come full circle working with community housing organisations since 2016 specialising in Aboriginal housing since 2017. Projects include:
The above projects have built on John’s extensive financial modelling and business analysis skills, and allowed him to understand the contemporary delivery of community housing across several jurisdictions. In many assignments John has been the key researcher coordinating interview, focus groups, workshops, data analysis and online surveys.
As well as holding a Business and Commerce degree from Manchester University, John is an associate member of the Chartered Global Institute of Management Accountants. In addition, he holds a master’s degree in International Studies and Research from the University of Technology, Sydney.
